It happens to us all: you own a car and fall in love. There are the memories of family trips, the days blasting through country lanes, the hours standing by the side of the road waiting for recovery. The dents and dings – each one has a story. Finally, real life intervenes and you have to sell it, an act you always regret.
Very occasionally, a car will find its way back to its owner. In this video, a car dealer stumbles across the MGA that his father used to own and love. He decides to buy it back, but what happens next is entirely unexpected.
Please enjoy Hagerty’s Christmas video, and we wish you and your cars a safe and happy festive season.
Oh, and keep the tissues handy!
(We’d love to hear the stories of the cars you regret selling in the comments below).
With huge thanks to Petroleum & Co for making the film for Hagerty, plus David Cox from Robert Glover Ltd for starring and providing invaluable support with cars and locations.
Wow, a true tear jerker! Lovely story. A different route and path for me – having randomly found my Dads UK RHD MGA Twin Cam on eBay, reimported from the US having journeyed from the UK to Barbados to Canada over 53 years of his ownership. He didn’t know my name due to Alzheimers, he passed in August. Cars are SUCH an emotional link to family and childhood. Keep sharing these amazing stories! @MGAlzheimers
This video has brought so many memories back to me. In 1965 I bought a new Triumph TR4a as a present to myself after a bitter divorce. I enjoyed the TR for three years then part exchanged it for a TR5 which was a terrible car with so many things wrong with it. I always missed my TR4a and couldn’t believe it when in 2014 my son discovered that my old 4a was insured. A long story but my beloved TR4a is now in my classic collection insured by Hagerty!!
So, my first car – in 1986 – was a ’61 MGA brought home for Christmas in boxes for me to restore at 15 years old. I restored it and daily drove it until I had to get a reliable car for work and school. I sold it and it went to Germany. Now, for my 50th Birthday a few days ago, my Dad gave me his ’57 that is in need of finishing. He can no longer get down and crawl around a car like he used to. It has come full circle from helping him with tools at 5 years old, to restoring my own, to now, and this time it will not be sold.

Wow, now that’s a good ad. My family own a very beautiful cj8, one that is older then me. All of my best childhood memories include this Jeep, all of the trips my family went on. We tried selling it a few years ago, because we were in a pretty bad financial situation, and I was so sad to realize I won’t get to drive it myself. Fortunately we didn’t find a buyer and I’m about to start learning for my driver’s license. I just can’t let go of this car. It’s a part of my family’s history. All of my childhood is in this car.
Wow Mumbo, you did a really good job. I’ve only seen two of your films before, Grian: The Cat Whisperer and The Silver Surfer, and your filming skills have improved by an alarming amout since then. Keep up the good work! – mosschopsful, known on Scratch as MossW
